CAHRS In-Person Working Group - Trends in Talent Development and Succession

Although talent development and succession took a backseat during the pandemic, they have received substantial attention over the past few years as companies seek to make up for lost ground as well as navigate a highly disruptive and changing landscape. Indeed, a recent CAHRS survey of CHROs found that talent development and succession are a Top 5 area of emphasis for companies for 2025.

Overview

In this working group, which will be held at the ILR School’s New York City Conference Center, CAHRS Academic Director and William J. Conaty Professor Brad Bell will lead a discussion focused on examining trends in talent development and succession while also sharing best practices across companies. The target audience for this session is individuals working in both HR business partner and COE roles that have responsibility for aspects of their organization’s talent development and/or succession planning efforts.

Below is a list of some of the topics that will be covered during the session, although time will be set aside to discuss other issues raised by attendees:

  • Which talent segments (e.g., executives, managers, key roles) are the currently the highest priority in terms of development and succession and why?
  • Which tools, technologies, programs, and experiences are companies finding most valuable for quickly developing critical capabilities?
  • What are the salient tensions that surround succession planning in today’s environment (e.g., short-term vs. long-term planning, internal vs. external hiring) and how are companies navigating them?
  • How are companies holding their leaders accountable for developing and moving their talent?
  • What tools and metrics are companies using to track the success of their talent development and succession efforts?

With that background, we are pleased to invite you to participate in this working group on trends in talent development and succession. During the session we will spend time talking about each of the topics above as well as others that are identified through the course of our conversations together. We will maintain a flexible schedule to allow for ample interaction and networking - something we consider critical to the goal of our working groups.
