In the ongoing war for talent and in recent periods of increasing employee mobility engaging and retaining high potentials and star performers is at the forefront of companies most pressing HR priorities. High potentials are often seen as the future of an organizations leadership, while stars distinguish themselves through extraordinary productivity, broad visibility, and valuable social capital in their roles as individual contributors. While both of these talent segments offer extraordinary value to their employers, they also enjoy the greatest attention from their employers labor market rivals, posing a significant threat of turnover.
In this working group, Professor Rebecca Kehoe will lead a discussion on managing high potentials and star performers. Some of the questions that will guide our discussion will include:
How does your company approach attracting and socializing high potentials and stars? Does this differ from your more standard approaches with other employees?
How do you maximize the value that high potentials and stars create in your company?
What problematic behaviors or challenges do you see high potentials and stars bringing to your company? What are some approaches that you have used to limit or mitigate these?
What strategies have you found to be most effective in engaging and retaining high potentials and stars?
Our virtual working groups are kept small (15-25 participants) to allow for rich discussion and best practice sharing. Given the limited size of each session, we ask that you only register for a session if you will be able to attend for the duration. Prior to the session, attendees should give some thought to the questions included in the description, so they are prepared to share with the group. We also strongly prefer that participants be on camera during the session to allow for more engaging interaction. If for some reason after you sign up for the working group, something comes up last minute (especially while many of us are working from home), it would be great to get even a last minute e-mail advising us that you cannot attend as we sometimes have a waiting list.
