Tips for Mid-Career Job Hunters

For Candidates who are Talented and Prepared, the Outlook Remains Positive

The Cornellians article "Tips for Mid-Career Job Hunters" features ILR HR Studies Associate Professor JR Keller, who provides practical advice for these candidates in the job market.

The most successful searches are systematic, says Keller. "Put together an Excel spreadsheet with the jobs you’ve applied to. Dedicate a certain number of hours per week; set a target for the number of applications. You might spend two hours identifying 20 good opportunities, and then over the next few days, spend 10 minutes on each."

Along with organizing your job search, it's also important to manage expectations. The new applicant tracking systems target candidates, so it's possible that someone may send out 100s of résumés and only hear back from a few companies.
