Policy Team wins in Binghamton

During this season's district opener, policy debate wins JV Finals and shows strength with multiple teams in elims!

The Cornell Policy Debate Team attended the Phyllis Schatz Debate Invitational at Binghamton last weekend. In the Open division, Piper Kohlenberger and Matthew Dye finished as Varsity semifinalists, with Matthew Dye also winning the 10th-place Varsity speaker award. Also originally in the Open Division, Mia Barratt and Sarah Thacker won their JV breakout final round and took home the title of JV Champions.

For the novice division, four teams comprised of April Vorontsova and Linda Sanchez, Karen Fernandez-Rua and Anand Patel, Bryce Williams and Jim (Zhiynag) Wang, and Riley Smith and Esmeralda Alverde-Duarte, all faced intense competition. Despite there being 36 teams in the division, three Cornell teams broke. April Vorontsova, Linda Sanchez, Karen Fernandez-Rua, and Anand Patel all became octofinalists, while Riley Smith and Esmeralda Alverde-Duarte became double-octofinalists. Alongside this, April Vorontsova also won the 8th-place Novice speaker award.

Overall, Cornell Policy Debate made a strong showing at the district opener and is hard at work, preparing for their upcoming Houston tournament!
