Policy Team wins at USMA and reclaims top 10 ranking nationally!
After dominating in the JV division at West Point, Cornell policy debate shows it can dominate nationally.
Between November 8th and 11th, the Cornell Policy Debate team traveled to the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. Competing in the JV division, teams comprised of Mia Barratt and Absa Diop, Matthew Dye and Oscar Zhuo, along with Sean Marcy and Ashley Bass faced familiar competition. Overall, Mia Barratt and Absa Diop advanced to finals and won the whole JV division, earning a West Point marching hat (pictured below). Furthermore, Absa Diop, Mia Barratt, and Matthew Dye all won speaker awards, with Absa Diop winning the top speaker award, Mia Barratt winning the 3rd speaker award, and Matthew Dye winning the 9th speaker award.
In the Novice league, teams comprised of April Vorontosva and Jim Wang, along with Esmeralda Alverde-Duarte and Riley Smith faced tough competition. Despite this, April Vorontosva and Jim Wang advanced to elimination rounds and became quarterfinalists. April Vorontosva also claimed the 3rd speaker award in the Novice division.
Overall, the Cornell Policy Debate Team had major successes at the 78th West Point tournament and has officially become the 10th best policy team in the nation (out of 75+ teams nationally).
