In this in-person event—organized by Cornell GLI, ECCHR and Human Rights Watch—we will explore the intersection of corporate sustainability, accountability, reporting requirements and labor rights. With the coming of due diligence and reporting requirements, including the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, it is critical to assess how these new corporate mandates will deliver for workers.
Speakers, including Member of European Parliament Lara Wolters, will participate in discussions and a panel, debating the implementation of CSDDD and what is needed to deliver on its goals–both social, labor, and environmental–for workers in global value chains. The agenda is as follows:
Corporate Sustainability and Accountability: How is it working for labor rights?
- Welcome and Introductions: Jason Judd, Cornell GLI
- Framing Remarks: MEP Lara Wolters
- Framing Analysis: Prof. Sarosh Kuruvilla
- Panel: How do we measure progress on labor outcomes in CSDDD and CSRD?
- Moderated by Samira Rafaela (GLI) w/ Lara Wolters (EP), Sarosh Kuruvilla (GLI), Diane Mievis (Cisco), Ben Vanpeperstraete (ECCHR), and Monica Viviana Tepfer (ITUC).
- Response: Zsofia Kerecsen (DG JUST)
- Open Questions and Answers
- Concluding Remarks: Hélène de Rengervé (HRW)
- Reception
The event will include a presentation of Cornell Global Labor Institute’s new Labor Outcomes Metrics, and a discussion of their potential for making human rights due diligence legislation effective for workers, firms and regulators. With a focus on quantitative outcomes measures, reporting can move beyond policy commitments by firms to impacts for workers.
