NLLI Leadership Convenes to Share Strategies in Current Labor Movement
On January 30, Labor Leadership Initiatives hosted a virtual gathering for alumni of the National Leadership Initiative (NLLI). Participants came together to discuss how they are adapting their leadership strategies within unions and organizations to tackle the current challenges facing workers, especially as their protections remain vulnerable. A fundamental principle of the NLLI program is to foster adaptive leadership that can navigate organizations through a rapidly evolving societal landscape. This gathering truly embodied that principle by showcasing various approaches leaders are implementing to position their organizations as the frontline defense for workers. Furthermore, the alumni network reaffirmed their commitment to diligently lead their organizations as the United States faces significant changes in labor laws and labor protections.
Over 75 leaders representing eleven years of the program attended the event. These influential leaders represent the dynamic labor movement, spanning diverse industries, sectors, and regions in the United States and Canada. The gathering featured a panel of innovative leaders who are guiding their organizations through some of the most challenging conditions in US history, including: Melinda Person, President of NYSUT; Lauren Jacobs, Executive Director of PowerSwitch Action; Manny Pastreich, President of SEIU 32 BJ; April Sims, President of the Washington State Labor Council; Jimmy Williams, President of IUPAT; Steve Schwartz, Organizing Director of LIUNA; and Jessica Garcia, Special Assistant to the President of RWDSU.
The overarching message underscored the need for ongoing organizing to safeguard workers’ rights, foster innovation through collaboration, and promote a unified message of solidarity—not just among the program's leaders and alumni but, most importantly, for workers throughout the United States and Canada.
