Understanding Healthcare Labor Conflicts and Possible Solutions
There have been 40 U.S. healthcare strikes in the past two years compared to 85 in the past 20 years. While it’s clear that the pandemic and high inflation have fueled this increase, their root causes have been with us for many decades and are often overlooked.
On January 16, 2024 the ILR School presented a webinar about the issues that have led to the recent healthcare labor actions and the kinds of solutions that may help alleviate the crisis.
The discussion was moderated by Ariel Avgar, ILR Senior Associate Dean for Outreach and Sponsored Research and David M Cohen Professor of Labor Relations, Law and History. His panelists included Deanna Dudley, Chief Human Resources Officer of El Camino Hospital: Rob Baril, President, SEIU Healthcare 1199NE; and John August, Director of Healthcare and Partner Programs at the Scheinman Institute.
