Liz Skidmore

Business Rep/Organizer

Liz Skidmore, Business Rep/Organizer for the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters has been a union carpenter since she started her apprenticeship in 1989.  She’s worked for over three decades to bring more women and people of color into good union construction careers.

In 2008, she co-convened the Policy Group on Tradeswomen’s Issues (PGTI) which has identified and implemented a number of game-changers for increasing women in the trades including an industry multi-stakeholder collaboration that’s met every other month for 14 years; an integrated supply and demand strategy; a new, broad pipeline for women into apprenticeship; and construction-hour childcare.  These strategies have helped raise Massachusetts’ female participation in apprenticeship to 10.4%, apparently the highest in the country, and over 30 targeted projects worth $7 B that are developing and using best practices have exceeded city, state and federal workforce goals for women and people of ethnic diversity.
